Frank Diego, the half-Mexican, middle class protagonist, is caught somewhere between late coming of age and early mid-life crisis when he finds himself forced to use public transportation for the first time– and his own two feet– in order to pick up his car 15 miles across town. Along the way, Frank confronts his past, criticizes the ironic history of his glorified hometown (San Diego), and meets characters who oddly challenge his present state of mind– ultimately derailing his simple day trip. While his bicultural identity becomes  clearer, his relationship with his “girlfriend” Kate grows cloudier. But by the time he awkwardly meets Kate at the end of his improbable journey, he’s had an epiphany that is both transformative and inspiring.
